Scooter ride down a palm-lined Canggu street

Gojek scooters in Canggu, Wira for everything else.

Transport

Getting around Bali

Wira Driver

Kara's recommendation for airport pickup, drop-off and day trips. She's used him for 10 years.

  • Speaks great English
  • Can arrange multiple drivers if needed
  • Pay drivers in cash — Indonesian Rupiah
WhatsApp +62 812-3772-6559

Canggu traffic is insane

A 30-minute car ride can become 1 to 1.5 hours.

Scooter is usually best

Gojek scooters get heavy use in Canggu.

Insurance check

Make sure your travel insurance covers scooters if you plan to ride.

Cash is king at warungs and beach bars — pull plenty of Rupiah.

Currency

Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Drivers and small purchases are cash.

Airport ATMs

Available after immigration before the arrivals hall — handy for first cash on arrival.

ATM picks

Maybank and BNI were recommended as they may avoid local ATM fees.

ING Orange Everyday

Traveller tip

Recommended by one Aussie traveller for overseas ATM fee benefits. Not financial advice — do your own check.

Cash vs card

Some prefer ATMs over carrying lots of cash. Others bring AUD and exchange in Bali to dodge ATM fees.

Booking quirks

Heads up

Links may show AUD or USD by region. Booking.com sometimes cheaper than official hotel links. Trip.com caused payment issues for one traveller.

Kara's Canggu recommendations

Where to eat, sweat, sip & swim

Curated by Kara — local favourites across food, fitness, day vibes and nightlife. ★ marks her personal go-tos.

Incredible restaurants

Tattoos & extras

Live music: a reggae bar in Sanur was mentioned (Sanur is far from Canggu though).

Dress code at FINNS (from chat)

  • • No gang colours.
  • • AFL jerseys are not permitted.
  • • Groups can't all wear the same team jersey.
  • Change rooms likely available — confirm with venue.

Before you go

Sort this out before you fly

Knock these out 2–6 weeks before departure so you're not scrambling at the airport. Australian passport holders unless noted — double-check your own country's rules.

Visa for Indonesia

Do this first

Most travellers (incl. Australia) need a Visa on Arrival (VOA / B1) — 30 days, extendable once for another 30. Cost is IDR 500,000 (~AUD $50).

  • Apply online via e-VOA (molina.imigrasi.go.id) 2–14 days before flying — skips the airport queue
  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date
  • At least 2 blank passport pages
  • Proof of onward / return flight (they sometimes ask)
  • Pay the IDR 150,000 tourist levy at lovebali.baliprov.go.id before you land

Staying past 30 May → 2 June wellness? You're fine on a single VOA — full trip is ~10 days.

Health & insurance

  • Travel insurance — non-negotiable. Must cover scooter riding (most policies exclude it unless you have a motorcycle licence)
  • Check your routine vaccines are up to date (Hep A, Typhoid, Tetanus). Talk to your GP / travel clinic 4–6 weeks out
  • Bali belly is real — pack Imodium, Hydralyte, and a probiotic
  • Bring any prescription meds in original packaging + a script copy
  • Mosquito repellent with DEET — dengue is around in wet season

Money prep

  • Tell your bank you're travelling so cards don't get blocked
  • Get a fee-free travel card (ING Orange Everyday, Wise, Revolut)
  • Bring a backup card kept separately from your main wallet
  • Don't bother with AUD cash to convert — withdraw IDR from a bank ATM on arrival
  • Budget rough idea: ~AUD $80–150/day excl. accommodation & add-ons

Phone & connectivity

  • Grab an eSIM before you fly — Airalo or Holafly, ~AUD $15 for 10 days
  • Download offline Google Maps for Canggu, Ubud, Uluwatu
  • Install Gojek & Grab apps and add a card now (verification can be slow on Indonesian networks)
  • Save Kara's number + the WhatsApp group pinned in your phone
  • WhatsApp is the default messaging app in Bali

2-week countdown checklist

  • e-VOA submitted & approval email saved offline
  • Tourist levy paid, QR saved to phone
  • Travel insurance purchased (with scooter cover if relevant)
  • Flights + accommodation confirmation emails downloaded
  • Add-on tickets booked on Thursday
  • eSIM installed (don't activate until you land)
  • Bank notified, travel card loaded with AUD
  • Photocopy / photo of passport stored in cloud
  • Emergency contact shared with someone at home
  • Check in 24h before each flight

Practical

What to pack & first-timer tips

Power & adapters

  • Bali uses Euro-style two-pin power outlets
  • Aussies: bring a universal adapter
  • Bring an Australian power board for charging multiple devices

Pool parties & beach clubs

  • Swimwear + change of clothes
  • Dry bag or waterproof pouch
  • Card / cash storage
  • Sunscreen, hat, thongs/slides

Don't rely on phones being waterproof in pools or saltwater.

Beach club outfit

Shorts, tee, swimwear, casual resort wear. Canggu and Ubud are busy — beach clubs may involve swimming.

Flights

  • Some travellers flying Perth → Bali; sales mentioned
  • AirAsia and Batik Air suggested for Perth → Denpasar direct
  • One traveller warned about Jetstar/Virgin cancellations due to jet fuel concerns
  • Confirm flight status before departure

Don't-forget essentials

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (expensive in Bali)
  • Aftersun / aloe vera
  • Insect repellent + after-bite
  • Reusable water bottle (don't drink tap water)
  • Light rainproof layer — late May is shoulder season
  • One nicer outfit for dinners / clubs
  • Activewear + runners for wellness segment
  • Yoga gear if you have it (mats provided in Ubud)
  • Small day backpack
  • Portable charger / power bank
  • Earplugs & eye mask (Canggu = roosters + scooters at dawn)
  • Basic first aid: bandaids, antiseptic, panadol

Open questions

Still to confirm

  • Exact party venue itinerary and times (Kara / Thursday to post)
  • Exact official start and end times
  • Whether specific extras have sold out
  • Final prices for wellness add-ons
  • Whether the wellness male accommodation is still sold out
  • Which spa treatments are available at Nirvana
  • Change rooms confirmed at specific venues
  • Flight schedules close to departure
